Threads of Trauma

Last night, as I shared in deep conversation with a Veteran that has become a close friend. We discussed how important it is they when we question God “Why?” did He allow me so much pain. We really should be questioning “what can I learn” from this pain. This sent me into a very late night of continued writing. Here is an excerpt of the chapter “Tapestry of Trauma". Imagine you are standing before a vast, intricate tapestry, which represents the grand design of the universe, woven by the hands of a divine artist. Each thread, each color, and each pattern holds a purpose, interwoven to create a beautiful and meaningful masterpiece. In this tapestry, there are sections of bright and vibrant colors, representing times of joy, success, and happiness. However, there are also areas of dark and somber hues, symbolizing moments of pain, struggle, and suffering. As humans, we often find ourselves entranced by the tapestry, trying to understand its complexities and questioning why certain threads lead to pain and suffering. We might ponder, "Why does God allow us to go through such difficult times? Why does He permit pain and sorrow to enter our lives?" Instead of dwelling solely on the "Why," let us shift our focus to the "What." Let us recognize that the divine artist, in His wisdom, uses even the darkest threads to impart valuable lessons and insights into our lives. Just as a skilled teacher employs challenging assignments and tests to help students learn and grow, God, too, uses the lessons found within pain and suffering to nurture our souls. He doesn't inflict pain upon us arbitrarily, but rather, He permits it to shape us into better versions of ourselves. Consider the allegory of a blacksmith who molds a raw piece of metal into a powerful, sturdy sword. The metal must endure intense heat and repeated hammering, but it emerges stronger and sharper, capable of fulfilling its purpose. Similarly, during times of pain and adversity, we are refined, strengthened, and equipped to fulfill our unique destinies. By asking, "What are you teaching me through this pain?" we open ourselves to growth, understanding, and self-discovery. It's about seeking the deeper meaning behind our experiences and recognizing the potential for personal transformation. In the tapestry of life, pain serves as a contrast, highlighting the moments of joy and teaching us gratitude. It fosters empathy and compassion for others who are experiencing their own trials. Pain also reveals the strength of the human spirit, showing us our resilience and ability to overcome challenges. Let us not be fixated on questioning why suffering exists, for that may lead to doubt and despair. Instead, let us embrace the lessons woven into the fabric of our lives. As we do so, we begin to see ourselves as part of a larger story—a story of growth, redemption, and ultimately, a deeper connection with the divine. Life's tapestry is a blend of joy and pain, and both have their purpose. By asking "What are you teaching me" through our pain, we acknowledge the divine wisdom behind every experience and welcome the opportunity to evolve into the best versions of ourselves. Embracing this perspective allows us to find meaning and hope even in the midst of life's darkest moments. - JAG
